This book drives home the economic basis of the French Revolution in under 300 pages of text. Occurring shortly after the American Revolution; with some influences from that earlier event, this one was much more complete and comprehensive in its rearrangement of social, political and economic power. The book begins by citing some other works on this topic, then dives into a summary of French society before the revolution. The book drives home the point that it was the economic structure of the society that caused the Revolution; its summarily unfair treatment of the poor; its almost complete basis on titles and privileges instead of on economic growth and technological progress, and its sham of a government. The book then steps us through the key stages and principals of the Revolution, from its numerous victims starting with the Royal family, to its villains such as Robespierre, to the various intellectuals consumed by it, such as Carnot, Voltaire and Condorcet. And finally, the book ends by describing the rise of Napoleon, who finally completed the Revolution by consolidating all power under one man, exactly the same scenario as before it.Product details

Going to Paris for the first time later this year, so it seemed like a good idea to relearn about the French Revolution. This book gives a good short introductory history of that turbulent time as well as the important locations and buildings around Paris where history shaping events took place.
The author does a nice job of laying out the French Revolution, in a book that isn't that large and is quite readable. Very well done, and free to boot. Definitely pick up if you like history.
No secondary or university education should be certified without a course on the intricacies of the French Revolution.

I was sorry that the book leaves off with Napoleon taking over. Very much appreciated! Simple, accessible, linear, readable. Provides a nice timeline and presents the major themes.
This wasn't what I had expected, but that is mostly my fault for being in a hurry and not looking into it more closely before purchasing. If you are wanting a straight to the point history on the French Revolution, then this would be a good choice for you. If you want something more in depth, then I suggest you look at other books on the subject.
I became interested in the French Reveloution after reading Charles Dickens' "A Tale of Two Cities." In our history books, after winning our own War of Independence, the revolutions of other countries were only mentioned. I wanted to know what were some of the grievances of the French people that led to it. The title states this is "a short history" which it is. I have since started reading one of the longer versions of the French Revolution. I am sure this version leaves out a lot of details, but it probably hits most of the important factors.
I always found this part of world history not very attractive for a reading, but I have to dedicate it some of my time and in that search I found this little book that summarize very well all the reasons and the evolution of the events that shook France in the 1789-1799 years. Although the way things happened are far from inspiring, sometimes chaotic and of course, very bloody, a change was needed indeed. They took the ax, la hache, to cut once and for all the putrid arms of the monarchy and its church. It was all made for the liberte, egalite, fraternite and for other not very convincing reasons.
