Der Augenzeuge, (The Eyewitness) addresses the question how Adolf Hitler, a soldier in WWI who was not promoted even to what would be lower non-commissioned rank in the US army, later exercised leadership qualities and political ability rarely equaled. This novel, written in the late 30's, uses A.H. as the name of a private who presents at a military clinic in 1918 for treatment of what was called hysterical blindness - the patient believes he cannot see, clinical examination reveals that the physical ability to see is intact. A.H. was distraught that he was unable to function as a soldier and desperately wanted to return to his duties. The treating physician, realizing that then standard treatments for such patients - shaming etc., would not work, in a magical chapter hypnotizes A.H. and tells him that he is indeed injured to the degree that most people would never see again, however, there are some who possess within themselves power to cure themselves and following this lead, A.H. regains his sight. In effecting this cure, the physician turns A.H. from a lowly private, and former starving, untalented art student and drifter, into a powerful leader.

Der Augenzeuge is the story of the treating physician's life from youth to the healing of A.H. and the events that followed including the rise of A.H. to power and the dangers and persecution experienced by the physician because of his knowledge of Hitler's illness and his possession of medical records he had made at the time. Because his wife was Jewish, he came under suspicion and was advised to go to Switzerland; he was imprisoned in a concentration camp and severely beaten there before he was "allowed" to escape; his wife had to give up his papers to arrange his "escape;" his marriage falls apart; but he turns himself toward fighting fascism.

Some of the novel is pedestrian, but much is chilling and fascinating. I was prompted to read it after coming on Internet articles about Dr. Edmund Forster who treated Hitler at a military hospital in Pasewalk in 1918, and about Ernst Weiss. Obviously, there is much speculation. It is difficult to believe that a relatively short course of psychiatrist could transform a common soldier into a leader of Hitler's demonstrated skills. But, speculation can be fun!
